Yesterday, Evelyn was keeping me company in our vanity area while I dried my hair. She usually keeps herself fairly entertained during this time by digging through the bottom draw of our cabinets. She just loves making a mess for me to pick up :). But yesterday, I suppose she lost interest in the draw because she decided to move on to other things... including my hair straightener :(.
I hang the straightener on our towel bar which in on the wall to the left of our sink. There is a small space between the sink and the wall, enough room for a small garbage can. We keep the garbage can towards the front of the sink and the straightener to the back of the bar. We know that it is not completely out of reach, but it is in a much better position there than sitting on top of the counter which she can now reach very easily.
Normally I can detect when those gears in that little head start turning. I know when she's plotting something and usually I am able to stop her before she gets too far. But yesterday she was too quick for me. I didn't see her lean her body over the garbage can. I didn't see her stretch her little arm out as far as it could reach. What I did see was the exact moment that her little hand wrapped itself around the iron... thumb touching the inside.
Immediately the crying started. I dropped my brush and hairdryer and grabbed her in my arms. We ran cold water over it, but we all know that doesn't help. I ran to the kitchen with her sobbing on my shoulder to grab some ice. She just kept saying "ouchy" and "hot" over and over again. All I could say was "I know baby, I know" :(. She wouldn't let me hold the ice on her little thumb, but she did let me cradle her for a couple of minutes while the shock and initial pain wore off. For the rest of the day, she seemed to be doing fine. I got a better look at her hand a while later and it appeared to be ok. I didn't even really see much evidence that anything happened.
This morning, my sweet girl woke up as normal and has been playing just as she usually does. Her hand did not seem to be bothering her one bit... I had even forgotten that she had burned it! Until a couple of hours ago...
She was following me around while I cleaned and I saw her looking down at her hand. She looked up with this frown on her face and said "ouchy" and almost started to cry. I glanced down at her hand and saw what looks like a huge popped blister on her thumb :(. How did I not notice all day that she had a blister??? I mean this thing covers her thumb! She must have been rubbing on it or something because now the skin is gone and she has an open wound on her poor little hand. And of course she won't keep a bandaid on it! And as expected with any open wound, it has been bothering her all evening :(.
So I guess we just have to keep an eye on it and try our best to keep it clean. Hopefully tomorrow she will wake up and be in less pain... my poor sweet girl :(!
