Well, today my not so little girl started her Kindergarten year :(. I am so proud of her, but I have to admit I teared up when we were dropping her off. And again later when I was telling my mom about it. And again when I was telling Ray about it!! I'm blaming the hormones ;).
Ainsley has been very excited to ride the bus to school on her first day because she has missed her bus-buddy Clayton very much. It took some convincing for her to let me actually take her to school this morning. Up until yesterday, I really was ok with putting her on the bus, but then I found out that mornings in Kindergarten don't work the same as mornings in Pre-K. Last year, the class always went to breakfast together, but not this year. Now, they are supposed to drop their bookbags off by their classroom and go eat breakfast by themselves. I know my big girl can handle it, but it made me nervous that this was something new and that she was going to get confused. Plus, I wanted to make sure she found her classroom :).
So Evelyn and I drove Ainsley to school and found our way together to her classroom. There were teachers all over willing to help so I know she would've been just fine, but it still made me feel better to be there with her. And I think it made her feel better too because she was feeling a little nervous. This became really apparent after we found her classroom and the teacher directed her to the cafeteria if she wanted to have some breakfast. She looked at me with this kind of "huh?" look. I took her hand and we walked together to the cafeteria, but then I asked her if she wanted me to leave yet. She said that I could wait until after she finished breakfast... almost broke my heart to see how nervous she was. We let her get her breakfast and sit with the other kids (although none that she knew) while we just sat off to the side and waited. That's when the tears started welling up. She was just sitting there eating quietly and not talking to anyone. Not even really looking around. Just sitting there, eating by herself... my poor baby! She just looked so unsure and lost :(.
After she finished, I showed her which door would take her back to her hallway and we walked together. She found her classroom again with no problem and sat down beside the other kids all waiting for the bell to ring. I think it took a max of 2 minutes before she was goofing off with the little boy next to her. At this moment I knew she was going to be just fine. And I think she knew it too. She looked at me and said, "ok mom, you can go now" with a big smile on her face. I gave her a kiss and we left her to make new friends :).
